                     "PEACE"

A gift to a friend of mine.  I asked her several questions to try  and
point  myself in a creative direction,  as  this  was  going  to  be  a
"custom" picture.  Once we had decided on the feel,  I sketched it
out and decided on most of the colors.   It just so happens that my
friend has trouble sleeping  and  my hope is that this  picture  may
offer her a sense of tranquility - peace.

We narrowed it down to "cats" and "pink". (I threw  in  the  butter -
flies   for   good   measure   -   I   love   butterflies!

A   gift   to  an   inspiration -   a  sweet  person  whom  I  share  an
unorthodox  friendship with.

I did my best to capture playfulness, beauty and joy.

It  was all about having this "angel" on a cloud to hang
above my daughter's bed -   giving her peace at night.

I  had  this  blue  "washed" background  painted on  a
canvas.  Originally it was going to be the  background
for  a  boat scene   that  I  envisioned hanging on   the
wall  by my desk at the office.    But instead  it  just sat
on the easel for months.    Emily said  she  would  like
an angel sleeping on a cloud, and this background  is
perfect!  So she told me what she wanted (really curly
hair and little wings) and we sketched it out.

I'll  tell you,  this project  sat  on  the easel for  as  long
as  the  background  did,  and  the  background   itself
was  redone   several    times   over!     There  was  at
one time a separate cloud  painted in the background
with   a  couple  of  "resting angels",   but    the  angels
looked  more  like   scary pixies,     so  I painted  them
out  - and  in doing so, created the "cosmic cloud" ...

Inspiration!   What it takes to move something from one's mind,  to  a
place  of  common  reality.    Mila   has done  this  for me   and  thus   -
her "garden".    Although  we  are  separated  by  time,  distance   and
culture; we are together in our passion  and  dreams.   The garden will
always   symbolize  the beauty,  joy  and  rich colors  of our  friendship.

After  20  + years  it was time
to do another clown.
  I  know,
I  know,  you  either  like  them
or
  are   scared   to  death   of
them
!   I  like  them.  Perhaps
it's the make-up and costume,
the theatrics - the illusion.

And
  the   performers  on  the
flying
   trapezes     ( could  the
"catcher" be Burt
Lancaster?).

Symbolism?
  Under  this  Big
Top - it's everywhere.

This   handsome  cat   was  an  off-shoot   idea  of  the   clown / circus    themed
painting that I had just completed   (thought  about  doing   a   "big top"    series).
Originally,    this    was    to   be   the   tiger   about   ready  to   jump  through   the
flaming hoop.  But  as  the  painting evolved, The  "flame"  became  an  abstract
frame  that  encircled  the surreal beast  -  my Tiger!
(plus, I had yet to paint an animal)

I've   always  been  transfixed  by  the  art  of
"Asia"  -  the  simple,  delicate and  beautiful
lines.    From   the  tapestry  that    my  father
brought back from one of his trips to  Japan,
to the paintings that I would study at Chinese
restaurants.  Knowing going into this project
that   I   am   not   qualified   to    authentically
recreate this style, my goal was to simply  try
and capture my feelings from all these years
of   admiration.     I   pulled   from the Internet
some Iconic symbols of Japan to shape and
balance   the   layout of  the piece.  The Red
-  crowned Crane, a Torii  gate, Cherry trees
in    full    blossom.    I   found   images   of   a
Tsumaguro    Hyomon   butterfly,      Bamboo
and    the    Japanese  characters  that  read
"Peace and Beauty"   in  English.    I   added
terraced   rice  paddies and   took  a chance
with Mt Fuji   (and now  looking    at    " real "
images   have  discovered  that
my  Mt  Fuji
is   substantially   more    peaked  -  claiming
creative    license   here ! ).     The   beautiful
woman   is  someone   I  know,  whose allure
provided   the   focal  point   from  which   the
painting took life.

Emily's  friend, Julia wrote a song
about  her  affection  for Blueberry
Muffins.   I asked  her  if  she really
did like them as much as her song
suggested.    She said "yes".   So,
next time  she  was  over  I  baked
some.  During breakfast one thing
led to another and it  was decided
that  I  would recycle one of Mike's
canvasas  and  here   is the result.
I'm not thrilled - yet I soooo want to
be!

until  I create  a "humor" page, this is where this little ink  &  watercolor
Christmas card will reside.   For my dad  ( a Golfer  &  devout Catholic )
in 2010.
