"Emily Rose" 12" x 16" acrylic on canvas © 2005 KmCarey
My precious daughter Emily.
This painting was a labor of love and my first attempt at portraiture.
I isolated myself within the confines of my bedroom as I sweat out the
final details; wondering if she would ever come to "life".
The original is lovingly displayed at her Grandma and Grandpa's
house in Ohio.

It was Mike's turn!
Mike never did express to me that he wanted me to paint a picture
of himself. Not even after I painted not one, but two pictures of his
sister!
Sure enough his mother had lobbied for his "turn", and I know there
were others (including family). But, I kept swearing off the dreaded
portrait - all the demands; the blending, exactness; and it never looks
just right!! I couldn't bear the thought of taking another one on! Give
me abstract or give me Tueyo, that was my motto.
Yeah yeah, then I decided to do a self-portrait, because every real
artist has one - right? How could I in good conscious do me without
doing him!
I didn't mention to Mike that I had started a painting with him in it,
and you should have seen his face when he first took a look at
it sitting there on the easel - his smile was golden! When I brought
over a photo copy of the finished painting, I asked him what he
thought of it and he said, "I like it".

I said "yes" when my dearest of friends up in Washington State
asked if I would paint a portrait of their daughter and Son. How
could I not? Five months from sketch outline on canvas to the
final strand of hair, the painting is ready to bring up and hand
deliver.
The painting is a reproduction of a digital photo that I took when I
was up visiting last summer. We snapped about twenty pictures
in all, with this image being the "chosen one" .
With its larger than life-size detail, the project was indeed a
challenge, and at times tested my patience and confidence. It
seems as though there was a "helper" to guide me through - and
I am most grateful for this!

This painting was Inspired by a photograph that I took of
Emily in the Wings of Asia exhibit at our local zoo.
Although I swore off portraiture before, during and after
this project; I had always been fond of the picture and
once I began to conceptualize a transfer of this image to
canvas, it was too late!. Why would I once again subject
myself to the ever demanding challenges of trying to
achieve with paint and a brush a balance between
"exactness" and personality? I have clues yes, but no
answer at this time.......

Officially named Arroyo Burro
(and unofficially "Haylie's Beach"),
this coastal playground brings back
many fond sun & surf memories.
I took the liberty of eradicating
anything man - made that normally
would be visible in this simple scene
- I could do that!

A special place for me - my first and only garden (outdoor room).
Although the garden is gone now, my hands will not soon forget
the pleasurable work done there, nor my thoughts the memories
of beauty, each new day awakened.
On the left is the original
"Wings" circa 2006. Emily
never liked it (too "alien")
and I tried totell myself that I
did. I even framed a print
and gave it to Amy. I finally
decided enough was enough
and put it back on the easel,
performing "acrylic surgery"
on 2/28/10. Much better -
"softer". I hope Emily likes it!

Created for my dad's birthday card this
year. I love the beach and my dad does
also. I used to enjoy watching the
Sandpipers run along the water's edge -
very whimsical.
"Rancho Cucamonga / Poof"

My perfectly imperfect lover. The painting of Jeannette is a composite
of photographs and video stills. My hope was to show off her special
charm and appeal. The smile is best remembered from her "We're
going to Rancho Cucamonga" video clip. The "Poof" and to where the
image floats here on the beach, is the mystery of now you see/hear/feel
her - and now you don't.
